In a bit of significant recruiting news, Pitt basketball has its first commitment of the Jeff Capel era. It’s early, but Capel and Pitt received a commitment from 4-star combo guard Trey McGowens. The 6-foot-3 guard, a top-100 prospect, will reclassify from 2019 to 2018, too.
Evan Daniels of 247 Sports is the first to report the story on Trey McGowens and Pitt.

It’s only a month into Jeff Capel’s tenure at Pitt, but one of the top recruiters in college basketball is already making a difference. According to 247 Sports, Capel was the lead recruiter for McGowens. The Panthers land McGowens’ commitment over a host of other prominent programs: Wake Forest, Clemson and Minnesota.
McGowens plays his prep ball for Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia.
This commitment is significant for a variety reasons, including the fact that Marcus Carr — Pitt’s starting point guard in 2017-18 — will transfer out of the program.
Last week, Capel completed his coaching staff, which includes his brother: Jason Capel.
