With the addition of Tyler Nickel, Hubert Davis and North Carolina continue to stack an impressive 2022 recruiting class. On Wednesday, Nickel committed to UNC. Nickel, a 6-foot-8 small forward from Virginia, ranks as a 4-star prospect and a top-80 prospect in the 2022 class, per 247 Sports.
North Carolina’s 2022 class, which is now four deep, ranks No. 1 nationally.

- 4-star PG Seth Trimble
- 4-star C Jalen Washington
- 4-star SF Tyler Nickel
- 3-star C Will Shaver
Shaver was the first to commit — back in early June. He was closely followed by Trimble and Washington. Unsurprisingly, there’s a strong emphasis on frontcourt play with the 2022 group. The Tar Heels are set to turn much of that position group over following the 2021-22 season.
Former UNC big man Sean May, who was retained by Davis when he took over for Roy Williams, led Nickel’s recruitment. Nickel, a product of Elkton (Va.) East Rockingham, committed to UNC only a few days after his official visit to campus.
Nickel picked UNC over a host of offers, including Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, LSU Stanford and Iowa.
