Could UNC land in-state 4-star DB Tony Davis, a recent Duke decommit?

After initially committing to Duke football early last December, 4-star defensive back Tony Davis has re-opened his recruitment.

The 6-foot-1 Davis, who plays for Huss (Gastonia) High School, is a top-15 player in the state of North Carolina. He’s now the third in-state decommit Duke has suffered from its 2019 class. One of the others — 3-star running back Zonovan Knight — subsequently committed to NC State. The other, wide receiver Donavon Greene, is now a Wake Forest commit.

Davis has received offers from a variety of top-notch programs, including Georgia, Florida, Michigan and Tennessee. NC State and North Carolina have also offered Davis.

Two months ago, Davis camped with North Carolina, and the Tar Heels are now seen as the favorite, by some, to land the defensive back. This would be a serious boon for Larry Fedora and UNC, which have struggled to gain a strong in-state foothold with the 2019 recruiting class.

During the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Tony Davis recorded 52 tackles and seven interceptions. He’s spent time on the offensive side of the ball, too.
