Clemson hires new assistant

Just over a week after Earl Grant was named the new head coach of the College of Charleston, Brad Brownell has hired a new assistant. Richie Riley, who spent the last two seasons as an assistant at UAB, has joined Clemson’s staff, the school announced Friday.

“Richie Riley is an outstanding young coach with a proven track record of success,” Brownell said in a statement. “He has worked his way up the coaching ladder and has a tremendous passion for the game of basketball. This is best shown in the way he recruits and builds relationships with student-athletes and coaches.”

Prior to his time at UAB, Riley served as an assistant at his alma mater, Eastern Kentucky, and before that he had a two-year coaching stint as an assistant under former Clemson coach Cliff Ellis at Coastal Carolina.

“I’m extremely excited to join the Clemson basketball family,” Riley said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to work for Coach Brownell. He is someone I’ve always admired, because he started his coaching career on a similar path as mine.”
