Senior DB/OLB Mook Reynolds gets dismissed from Virginia Tech

It’s been an up-and-down offseason in Blacksburg for Virginia Tech football. The latest bit of news is another big blow, too: senior defender Mook Reyolds has been dismissed from the football program. Virginia Tech announced the decision, which is effective immediately, a little after 8 a.m. on Monday morning.

Reynolds, who started 26 games in three seasons with the Hokies, played a variety of positions for Bud Fosters’s defense. In 2017, Reynolds recorded 70 total tackles (nine for loss) and 1.5 sacks.

As a sophomore in 2016, the former 4-star prospect from North Carolina posted 64 total tackles — 9.5 of which were for a loss. He also intercepted two passes that season, including one off Pitt’s Nate Petermanthe ACC’s most efficient passer.

Reynolds was one of only two ACC players in 2016 to record at least 60 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions.

For his career, Reynolds racked up 22.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

Just the latest

As Andy Bitter points out on Twitter, the dismissal of Mook Reynolds is the most recent bit of news in a tumultuous offseason, especially for Virginia Tech’s defense.

Reynolds was expected to contribute once significantly to the Hokies defense from his hybrid outside linebacker position in 2018. That, however, will not be the case.

Back in the spring, Reynolds was suspended. During that time, Devon Hunter took on those hybrid duties.
