Spring Games on Horizon

Spring football is in full swing throughout most of the ACC, as schools seek to either build off the late momentum and successes of the 2014 season, or to put last season’s disappointments behind them.

Duke got out of the gate quicker than anyone else this year, conducting spring ball throughout the month of February. The Blue Devils played their spring game Feb. 28.

One other ACC Coastal program, Miami, is completing spring football by the end of March. The Hurricanes conduct its spring game Saturday, March 28. The remainder of ACC schools that are playing spring games are doing so in the month of April.

Four Atlantic Division schools have their spring game all on the same day — April 11 — which will prove competitive as far as getting top recruits on campus. It might be especially competitive for ACC stalwarts Florida State and Clemson, who are recruiting many of the same prospects and will be fighting each other to get them to their campus as opposed to their biggest divisional rival.

North Carolina and Boston College are the only ACC schools not hosting formal spring games on campus this year. BC elected to host an offense/defense scrimmage March 28 instead of the annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football Game at Alumni Stadium, initially scheduled for April 11.

“Our job is to prepare our team for the 2015 season,” BC head coach Steve Addazio said in a school release. “These adjustments are meant to best serve our team.”

In UNC’s case, Kenan Stadium’s playing field is undergoing offseason renovations, requiring the Tar Heels to hold its event elsewhere. North Carolina is hosting a public scrimmage in Chapel Hill March 28 on its practice field, and will hold an off-campus scrimmage April 11 in Charlotte that will constitute as UNC’s spring game.

The ACC Sports Journal provides its readers with a list of all the ACC spring game dates, times, and online viewing details, if applicable.
