Buzz Williams receives contract extension

Virginia Tech has extended the contract of men’s basketball coach Buzz Williams through the 2022-23 season.

Athletic director Whit Babcock announced the two-year extension Wednesday.

Williams has coached the Hokies for two seasons, and last year produced once of the best turnarounds in ACC history. Virginia Tech went from 11-22 overall and 2-16 in league play in Williams’ first season to 20-15 overall and 10-8 in the ACC last year.

The Hokies also beat a pair of top 10 teams – No. 4 Virginia and No. 7 Miami – and won a program-record six consecutive games in the conference on their way to a 20-15 record and a spot in the NIT.

Williams, who came to Virginia Tech after six seasons at Marquette, originally signed a seven-year contract.
