Virginia Tech had an opening game against the defending national champions, with a game against Ohio State on Labor Day evening. The showdown against one of the teams expected to contend for this year’s title likely shortened coach Frank Beamer’s playing rotation. Still, a handful of true freshmen got into the game, but, surprisingly, not the crown jewel of the incoming class.
