FSU dismisses quarterback who punched woman

Florida State dismissed freshman quarterback De’Andre Johnson after security camera footage showed him punching a woman in the face.

Johnson had been suspended since June 25 — one day after the incident. The footage was released by the state’s attorney office on July 6, and Johnson was officially dismissed later that evening.

Johnson has been charged with misdemeanor battery. The camera footage shows that the altercation began when Johnson tried to push his way to the front of a bar. He and the female student got into a verbal argument that quickly became physical. The woman, whose arms were being held by Johnson, attempted to hit him with her left hand. Johnson then reared back and struck the woman in the face with a forceful punch. Johnson left the scene immediately while the woman asked around the bar for assistance.

Johnson was a freshman who enrolled at Florida State in January. He went through spring practice with the Seminoles and was in contention for the No. 3 spot on the quarterback depth chart. A commit for more than two years before officially signing, Johnson was one of two quarterbacks in Florida State’s 2015 class. Deondre Francois, the higher-rated prospect of the two, also signed.
