David Cutcliffe joined The David Glenn Show on Thursday, and among topics discussed was how the Duke football coach handles a situation when an NFL executive asks about his players. Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari recently admitted that he lies to the NBA for the benefit of his Wildcats players who are pro prospects.
Cutcliffe, on the other hand, takes a different route.
“Early on, if I have an athlete that’s struggling in areas personally—behavior, whether it be social or attitude or otherwise—I let [the executives] know,” the seventh-year Blue Devil Coach said.
Because of the importance he places on the relationship he has with his players, Cutcliffe feels obligated to make sure his word carries weight when he’s asked about someone of high character.
“I want people in the NFL, when I tell them that Ross Cockrell is different…well, they’re going to pay attention to it.”
During the interview, Cutcliffe also gives his opinion on Johnny Manziel, talks about when it’s appropriate to cuss and shares some insight on Duke spring ball. Click below to hear the full interview.
