DURHAM, N.C. – Junior wide receiver Johnell Barnes caught five passes for 103 yards to highlight Duke’s 70-play scrimmage on Saturday night at the Brooks Practice Facility.
“I’m extremely excited to watch this tape tonight,” commented head coach David Cutcliffe following the session. “I know we’ll see some good things along with areas that we need to improve on. What we see on film will give us a good indication of where we are at this point of camp.”
Of his scrimmage-high five receptions, Barnes logged catches covering 37 yards from redshirt junior quarterback Thomas Sirk and 45 yards from redshirt sophomore signal-caller Parker Boehme. Senior wideout Max McCaffrey added four grabs for 42 yards while redshirt junior tight end Erich Schneider hauled in the night’s lone touchdown on a nine-yard effort from Boehme.
Sirk finished the night completing 13-of-21 pass attempts for 104 yards while Boehme was six-of-10 through the air for 90 yards with one touchdown and one interception. In limited action, senior running back Shaquille Powell gained a team-high 15 rushing yards on four attempts.
Defensively, sophomore linebacker Zavier Carmichael logged one interception and one fumble recovery while rookie cornerback Jeremy McDuffie added one interception along with one pass breakup. Sophomore defensive end Danny Doyle posted a pair of quarterback sacks.
