New contributors emerge for Duke after injury bug bites

For a couple of weeks, Duke’s coaching staff knew chances were slim it would have redshirt senior quarterback Thomas Sirk for the season-opening game.

His stalled recovery from the Achilles tear he suffered in February caused head coach David Cutcliffe and offensive coordinator Zac Roper to give redshirt freshman Daniel Jones first-team repetitions.

So when Sirk suffered another Achilles tear last Thursday that ended his season before it began, the Blue Devils were prepared, and Jones will start Saturday night against N.C. Central.

Injuries from preseason practices left the rest of Duke’s depth chart relatively untouched. “Relatively” is the key part of that sentence.
