Virginia Tech quarterback to transfer

Virginia Tech quarterback Dwayne Lawson is transferring out of the program, head coach Justin Fuente announced Monday. The sophomore signal-caller will enroll at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan.

Lawson arrived in Blacksburg last summer as part of the Hokies’ 2015 recruiting class.

“Our coaches and staff at Virginia Tech invested significant effort in providing Dwayne the support and resources to be successful as both a student and an athlete, as did Coach Beamer and his staff,” Fuente said. “After conversation with Dwayne, he felt leaving our program would be in his best interest. We wish Dwayne the best at Hutchinson Community College.”

A former 4-star prospect from Tampa, Fla., Lawson played in five games as a true freshman last fall. He completed three of nine passes on the year for 51 yards.

Lawson entered the spring as a candidate to take over the starting job going into 2016. By the end of spring, however, senior Brenden Motley and junior college transfer Jerod Evans were splitting first-team reps.

Lawson’s departure leaves the Hokies with three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
