Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski on NIL: “We’ve been catching up to decades of never doing anything; the landscape for these kids has changed”

Before the start of the 2019-20 ACC Basketball season, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski sat down with David Glenn at Operation Basketball. Coach K and DG covered a lot of ground in an expansive interview, including, of course, the Fair Pay to Play Act.

Krzyzewski believes that after years of lagging behind, it’s time for college athletics to catch up: “By the end of the season, I’m sure there will be dozens of states that will pass this legislation, and they may not wait until 2023. So it’s a pressing need to take a look at the whole thing. What do we do for the kids that we have the honor to bring into our institutions and coach?”

Coach K continued: “We need, as coaches, to act more like a union and look out for the interests of the game — and specifically the interests of the players. The players have no advocates.”

DG and Krzyzewski also discussed USA Basketball, Zion Williamson, some of the best pros he’s ever coached, Duke in the NBA, how the 2019 season ended and the challenges with winning championships.
