Mike Krzyzewski’s latest health issue gives Jeff Capel another chance to further cement himself at the top of the line of possible successors to the Duke basketball throne.
The 69-year-old Krzyzewski is scheduled to have surgery on Friday at Duke Hospital, so the last Duke game he’ll coach for, perhaps, the rest of January will be Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium against Georgia Tech.
Capel, Duke’s associate head coach, will sit next to Krzyzewski as usual that night. When Duke plays next on Saturday against Boston College, he’ll be designated as the team’s interim coach.
It’s a position Capel has held previously and with success.
