North Carolina’s 2016 class consisted of 24 commitments both going into and coming out of this past weekend, but a couple changes were made as the Tar Heels hosted several official visitors between Friday and Sunday.
According to multiple reports, safety Javontay Smith reopened his recruitment on Sunday. The Columbus, Georgia, native originally pledged to UNC in November 2014.
Larry Fedora’s staff also added a safety commitment on Sunday, landing D.J. Ford of Lineville, Alabama. A 6-3, 195-pound prospect, Ford currently attends Clay Central High School.
With signing day just over two weeks away, UNC has four safeties committed to its 2016 group. Ford is the second player from his state to choose the Heels this cycle, joining Auburn offensive lineman Tyler Pritchett.
