North Carolina’s 2015 season opener against South Carolina has been moved from a Saturday to a Thursday, the Charlotte Sports Foundation announced on Wednesday. Although the game was previously scheduled for Sept. 5, 2015, it will be played in primetime on Sept. 3, 2015.
It will mark the second time in three years that the Tar Heels and Gamecocks play one another in a Thursday opener. In 2013, UNC traveled to Columbia, South Carolina, on a Thursday and was defeated, 27-10. It will be the fourth straight year that South Carolina has opened its season on a Thursday, beating Vanderbilt in 2012 and losing to Texas A&M to kick off the 2014 season.
North Carolina and South Carolina have played each other 56 times since their first meeting in 1903. The Tar Heels lead the all-time series 34-18-4 but lost their last two matchups against the Gamecocks.
