The University of North Carolina and the University of South Carolina have agreed to two additional season-opening football games in 2019 and 2023 to be played in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, the Charlotte Sports Foundation (CSF) announced Wednesday. The exact dates have not been decided, but the game will be played over Labor Day weekend, which may include Thursday night.
The two teams are already scheduled to kick off the 2015 college football season in Charlotte on Thursday, Sept. 3.
“The continuation of the South Carolina series offers our student-athletes a tremendous opportunity to play once every four years against a regional rival in an NFL stadium,” said UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham. “This is an outstanding non-conference rivalry game for the state of North Carolina, our fans, and the city of Charlotte, which has always supported the Tar Heels.”
The Charlotte Sports Foundation, a non-profit organization, runs the Belk Bowl and serves as the local organizing committee for the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game. The foundation’s mission is to create, recruit and execute high-caliber athletic events.
The Tar Heels have also signed a home-and-home series with Old Dominion for 2017 and 2020; home games against The Citadel and James Madison in 2016; and home games against Western Carolina in 2017 and 2018.
