Just hours after landing one of its top remaining offensive targets in the 2016 class, North Carolina picked up a key defensive commitment on Friday when in-state linebacker Jonathan Smith pledged to the Tar Heels. Smith chose UNC over Duke, Georgia Tech, Michigan and others.
With Smith committed, North Carolina has nine defensive prospects in its 2016 group. Smith is considered the No. 30 senior in his state on the 247Sports Composite.
Earlier on Friday, the Tar Heels landed Durham, North Carolina, running back Jordon Brown. Following Smith’s commitment, the team’s 2016 class stands at 17 members.
