UNC defensive back suspended, facing charges

North Carolina cornerback Malik Simmons has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities, the school announced Friday. The suspension comes following multiple recent off-field troubles.

Simmons is facing misdemeanor charges for possession of marijuana up to half an ounce and resisting a public officer. The Lehigh Acres, Florida, native will appear in court on July 28 for the resisting charge and on Aug. 3 for the marijuana charge.

Simmons was listed as a co-starter at corner on the Tar Heels’ preseason depth chart. In 2014, he logged 34 tackles, three pass breakups and a forced fumble.
