North Carolina cornerback Mike Hughes is no longer on the team, per John McCann of The Herald-Sun. The rising sophomore is still enrolled in classes at UNC.
Hughes saw action in 12 games for the Tar Heels as a freshman, logging 11 tackles and defending three passes. He was suspended for the Wake Forest game on Oct. 17, however, after he was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor after an altercation at a UNC fraternity house just hours after the team’s 38-31 win at Georgia Tech on Oct. 3.
With Hughes no longer on the roster, Larry Fedora’s squad enters the spring with only three returning scholarship players at cornerback. That group includes M.J. Stewart and Des Lawrence, who were both starters in 2015, along with rising sophomore Corey Bell, who played in two games as a true freshman last fall.
