In the Tidewater: UNC beats out heavyweights for 4-star RB George Pettaway

Michigan, Penn State, Alabama, Auburn. All four of these programs recruited and offered George Pettaway. However, North Carolina was the favorite to land the 4-star running back — for months now. Well, it’s official now: the Virginia product is the newest member of Mack Brown’s 2022 recruiting class.

The Tidewater area of Virginia has been a crucial recruiting region for Brown. It’s no surprise that assistant coach Dre Bly, who hails from Chesapeake, was the lead recruiter for Pettaway, a product of nearby Suffolk.

Bly was the primary for other recent Tidewater commits: 5-star cornerback Tony Grimes, 4-star wide receiver Tychaun Chapman and 4-star cornerback Tayon Holloway.

Chapman, Holloway and Pettaway are all members of the 2022 class; each player ranks as a top-200 overall prospect, according to 247 Sports, which labels Pettaway as the No. 7 running back in the entire class.
