Since arriving at Wake Forest, Dave Clawson has had some difficulty landing out-of-state running back prospects early in the recruiting cycle.
In four classes, Clawson has landed in-state prospects Isaiah Robinson, Cade Carney and Christian Beal early. He’s had to wait until the last moment to get out-of-state Matt Colburn and Arkeem Byrd, both flips from other schools. He also landed in-state Rocky Reid as a late flip.
The only out-of-state running back to commit early has been Tyler Bell, who was not a highly recruited back in 2015.
Clawson and Wake Forest missed a couple chances to change that narrative when two out-of-state targets at running back committed to other schools.
Mateo Durant was thought to be the Deacons’ No. 1 target for several months now, but Durant committed to Duke. Durant, out of McCormick, S.C., is ranked No. 98 by 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings.
A secondary target, JaVeon Marlow, committed to Vanderbilt. Marlow, from Winter Haven, Fla., is ranked No. 66.
