North Carolina’s defense was a disaster through the team’s first two games. The Tar Heels allowed Cal, with a young quarterback, Ross Bowers, and first-year head coach, Justin Wilcox, to gain 363 passing yards and produce over 460 offensive yards. The following week, UNC gave up over 700 total offensive yards to Lamar Jackson and Louisville. It added up to an 0-2 start, and a lot of grumbling about poor Tar Heel defenses under Larry Fedora.
