Is NC State’s basketball roster set for the 2017-18 season?

Is NC State done with its roster for 2016-17? Technically, coach Kevin Keatts has another scholarship at his disposal.

The Pack has offered junior college wing Mike’l Simms from Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kan. However, the recent additions of transfer wings C.J. Bryce (UNC Wilmington) and Devon Daniels (Utah) may make landing Simms unlikely.

Simms would be eligible to play right away, but he also has three years of eligibility left. His opportunity for playing time could dwindle once Bryce and Daniels are eligible for the 2018-19 season.

Five-star wing Brian Bowen from La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., has listed NC State among his top six. But the never-ending recruitment took another twist when he visited Louisville earlier this week to Louisville. Even before that visit, NC State stood as a long shot in Bowen’s recruitment.

Thus, after a busy couple of weeks, the roster appears set. Ted Kapita, Maverick Rowan and Dennis Smith Jr. have left for professional careers. Abdul-Malik Abu and Omer Yurtseven decided to come back for another year. Grad transfer guards Al Freeman (Baylor) and Sam Hunt (North Carolina A&T) and top-100 guard Lavar Batts joined Keatts’ program. Bryce and Daniels will watch from the end of the bench next year while sitting out a redshirt season, per transfer rules.
