It’s a good problem for Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame coaches to have, but it’s a problem nonetheless. Who will take the reins at quarterback for the Fighting Irish this fall — DeShone Kizer or Malik Zaire?
Kizer, a righty, and Zaire, a southpaw, were both named to the preseason Maxwell Award watch list this summer, which is indicative of the high esteem national analysts and scouts have for the pair. Zaire has fully recovered from the ankle injury that curtailed his 2015 season — as he proved with a healthy spring and a 13-yard scamper for a touchdown in the Irish’s spring game back in April — while Kizer looked polished and settled into the starting role that he assumed last year when Zaire went down. The Notre Dame coaches didn’t push Zaire too hard in the spring, keeping him mostly out of contact situations.
