Choosing a college coach who can be successful is a difficult job.
Only a few coaches win conference titles or go deep into the postseason. That leaves many explaining their failures and planning for next year. And that leaves a lot of athletic directors answering to fan bases who are wondering if their coaches are even the right people for the job.
Ron Wellman hired a lot of good coaches in his almost 27 years as athletic director at Wake Forest. Those coaches led Wake Forest to 22 ACC championships and five team and seven individual national championships.
Wellman also hired Skip Prosser and Jim Grobe, who became two of the most popular coaches in Wake Forest history. He’s responsible for bringing in Dave Clawson, who has the football program on strong footing.
But Wellman’s recent inability to find the right basketball coach not only tarnished his long, successful career, but it led directly to his abrupt retirement announcement on Sunday.
