A busy offseason for Virginia basketball keeps getting busier, most recently with news coming from the transfer circuit. On Tuesday night, multiple outlets reported that Tennessee point guard Darius Thompson is transferring to the Cavaliers.
As a freshman last year, Thompson started 10 games for the Vols, averaging 16.8 minutes per game. On the season, he had 87 assists to 34 turnovers. Per NCAA transfer rules, the Murfreesboro, Tenn., native will have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2014-15 season.
Thompson’s presence will provide depth to a Virginia backcourt that suffered the loss of Teven Jones just over a week after the Hoos were knocked out of the NCAA tournament. Jones’ decision to transfer to Appalachian State left London Perrantes and Devon Hall as Tony Bennett’s only point guards, forcing the coach to make a late push for 2014 prospect Devonte’ Graham. While Graham ultimately committed to Kansas, Thompson certainly appears capable of filling the void left by Jones.
