Gauging teams off a spring game is a bit of an oxymoron, especially when the teams were divided like N.C. State did it last Saturday. The starters and key reserves were on the Red Team, which walloped the younger reserves and walk-ons on the White Team, 47-0.
The Red Team looked good, but they were supposed to be good. Nevertheless, the play of the quarterbacks (redshirt sophomore Jalan McClendon and redshirt freshman Jakobi Meyers) impressed, especially considering the offense missed several key contributors.
No less than five likely starters/integral components of the offense sat out: senior running back Matthew Dayes, junior tight end/fullback Jaylen Samuels, senior receiver Jumichael Ramos, junior guard/center Tony Adams and sophomore running back Reggie Gallaspy.
