The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded on June 6, 1946, in New York City. Originally known as the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the league was established by owners of major ice hockey arenas to fill their venues during the winter months when hockey games were less frequent. The BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949, adopting the name National Basketball Association (NBA).
The founding of the NBA marked a significant moment in the history of professional basketball, as it brought together some of the best teams and players under one organization. The league started with 11 teams, including the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia Warriors (now the Golden State Warriors). Over the decades, the NBA has grown into a global phenomenon, becoming one of the most popular and influential sports leagues in the world.
Today, the NBA is celebrated for its high level of competition, iconic players, and cultural impact, with its founding year of 1946 serving as the cornerstone of its rich history.
