In college basketball, you don’t hear about “tanking” as you do in the NBA.
The reasons are easy to understand: The college game doesn’t have a prize to be gained by losing, such as a top draft pick. In addition, coaches are reluctant to lose any more than necessary, both for their own job security and because they’re trying to recruit future players.
But if tanking is about not focusing on current success while pursuing a better outlook for the future, then perhaps there is a version that makes sense in college basketball. If a coach is willing to decrease the minutes of seniors in order to give playing time to young players, he’s essentially playing for next season.
