NC State fires co-defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable

For the entirety of Dave Doeren’s tenure at NC State, Dave Huxtable served as the defensive coordinator. However, at the conclusion of a disappointing 4-8 2019 season, Huxtable was fired. Huxtable also coached the team’s linebackers. Back in January 2019, NC State hired Tony Gibson as a co-defensive coordinator. He was brought in to replace Ted Roof.

NC State sent out a press release regarding the matter early Monday morning. Director of Athletics Boo Coorigan also confirmed that Doeren will return as NC State’s coach in 2020.

While most of NC State’s more obvious struggles came on offense in 2019, it wasn’t exactly a banner year for the defense, either. The Pack finished eighth in the ACC in total defense: 399 yards per game. According to ESPN, NC State ranked 78th in defensive efficiency.

In the two years prior to coming to NC State, Huxtable coached at Wisconsin (linebackers, 2011) and Pittsburgh (defensive coordinator, 2012). Huxtable also coached at UNC from 2001-03; he served as the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator (2002-03) in Chapel Hill.
