Wake Forest reportedly close to hiring new defensive coordinator

Multiple reports are linking Jay Sawvel to Wake Forest for its open spot at defensive coordinator.

Formerly the coordinator at Minnesota, Sawvel led a Golden Gopher defense in 2016 that finished No. 21 nationally in both total defense (348.8 YPG allowed) and scoring defense (22.1 PPG allowed). His squad forced 25 turnovers, tying for 24th in the country.

We mentioned Sawvel as a candidate for the job early in Wake Forest’s search, mainly because he was successful but also not a big enough name to attract major-program attention if the dominoes fell at Minnesota. On Jan. 3, that’s exactly what happened as Minnesota fired head coach Tracy Claeys and the majority of the staff after the football program clashed with with the administration over 10 players being suspended for connections to sexual assault allegations.
