It happens essentially every time a head coaching job opens up in the Big Ten. In this case, the mild surprise and strange timing of Thad Matta’s departure at Ohio State certainly won’t stop speculation about Tony Bennett’s potential candidacy this time either.
It, of course, mostly stems from the fact Bennett, entering his ninth season at Virginia, is Wisconsin born and bred. He got his start in college coaching with the Wisconsin Badgers as an assistant to his father. The family’s Midwestern ties extend to his sister formerly coaching the Indiana women.
Bennett’s name immediately popped up when Indiana and Illinois had openings this spring. However, there was never really any indication of interest on the coach’s part.
So do Cavaliers fans have anything to worry about this time around?
