Will any Wake Forest assistants follow Elko to Notre Dame?

While many are wondering about what will be in their stockings, Wake Forest football fans are wondering about the ripple effects of defensive coordinator Mike Elko leaving to take the same position at Notre Dame.

The first impact was the decommitment of Avery Showell, a safety from Alpharetta, Ga. On Dec. 16, Showell tweeted: “Tough decision. I’ve decided to decommit from Wake Forest and reopen my recruitment. Wake Forest will remain a contender.”

While Showell didn’t mention Elko by name, Elko also coached the safeties at Wake Forest, so it’s not a difficult to draw the conclusion that the decisions were related. Showell (6-2, 195 lbs) is ranked the No. 96 safety in 247Sports’ composite rankings. He fits the profile of Jessie Bates in size, speed and being a bit overlooked, and Elko turned Bates into a star this season.

Showell committed in July, and at the time, he also had offers from Minnesota, West Virginia, Tulane and Rutgers, among others.

No other recruits have announced changes in their statuses yet, and the Deacons hope they can keep it that way until a replacement is found.

But the next wave could be that Elko takes another WFU assistant with him.
