Is Wake Forest closing the deal on new defensive coordinator?

Robb Smith may or may not be the next defensive coordinator at Wake Forest.

A report — claiming multiple sources — by FootballScoop.com surfaced Friday that said Smith, currently the Arkansas defensive coordinator, would take the Wake Forest job that opened when Mike Elko left for Notre Dame.

However, Arkansas sports radio personality Bo Mattingly tweeted that he had contacted Smith, who refuted that report.

Perhaps the devil is in the semantics. FootballScoop said that Smith is “expected” to take the Wake Forest job but that the deal is not complete. Mattingly reported that Smith said he “has not been offered” the job.

Usually in these scenarios, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. So it’s a reasonable assumption that Dave Clawson has been heavily engaged with Smith.
