Doeren’s return doesn’t eliminate Wolfpack’s long-term dilemma

NC State head coach Dave Doeren received some peace of mind after his team’s 28-21 upset win at archrival North Carolina on Nov. 25. The victory was followed a day later by a proclamation from athletic director Debbie Yow that Doeren would return for a fifth season.

That seemed like a foregone conclusion for much of the season, but the grumblings grew loud following a home loss to Boston College on Oct. 29. A 14-point loss to Miami in front of a less-than-enthusiastic home crowd on Nov. 19 fueled more speculation about Doeren’s immediate future.

In the end, NC State’s win over UNC capped a regular season that included disappointing losses but also showed appreciable improvement against some of the league’s top teams. In addition to beating the Heels, NC State had outstanding opportunities to defeat both Clemson and Florida State before letting both games slip away in the final moments.

Now that Doeren is set to return, some may wonder if a contract extension would be worthwhile…
