Tuesday’s announcement that Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage will retire didn’t come as a huge surprise, but it does leave the university in an awkward situation of simultaneously looking for a new president, athletic director and top deputy AD.
Though the football program took a downturn in the latter years of Littlepage’s time in charge, his accomplishments as AD are undeniable. Since 2002, Virginia has won 76 ACC championships and 13 NCAA team titles.
Littlepage leaves a large legacy and his replacement will have his or her work cut out for them, facing a challenge to maintain success across the board while continuing to improve fundraising and boost the football program.
Given UVA’s own recent history hiring for prominent positions, and considering AD hires made at schools such Virginia Tech and Tennessee, it seems likely Virginia focuses on candidates with prior experience leading a Division I athletic department.
