Boston College sophomore Ky Bowman has been voted the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week, while Miami freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV earned ACC Rookie of the Week accolades.
Both players were recognized for the first time this season. ACC basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel.
Bowman just missed a triple-double in leading the Eagles to an 89-84 upset of top-ranked Duke in Saturday’s 2017-18 conference opener at Conte Forum. The Havelock, North Carolina, native finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists as Boston College registered its first win over Duke since 2009 and the Eagles’ first victory over a No. 1 ranked team since 2014.
Bowman connected on 12-of-24 of his shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers. He scored 15 of his 30 points in the first half and 10 points in the final 10 minutes of play. Six of Bowman’s points came in the final five minutes as the Eagles outscored Duke 18-10 to claim the victory.
The 30 points were the most scored in a single game by an opposing player vs. No. 1 Duke this season and the most by a Blue Devil opponent since last Feb. 18 (John Collins, Wake Forest – 31). It marked Bowman’s fourth career 30-point performance in 42 career games played, and his third in ACC play through 19 career conference contests.
Miami’s Walker recorded career highs in points and rebounds with 26 points and seven rebounds while making his first career start in the Hurricanes’ win over Boston University. The Reading, Pennsylvania, native was 9-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range.
Walker played a season-best 28 minutes while starting in place of the injured Bruce Brown Jr. Eighteen of his 26 points came in the second half, as he was 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Ten of Miami’s first 16 points in the second half came from Walker as the Hurricanes found breathing room in what had been a close game at intermission.
