Jase Richardson is officially the latest Michigan State Spartan to be selected in the NBA Draft.
Richardson was selected by the Orlando Magic with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday night. The selection of Richardson by the Magic makes him the highest-selected Spartans player since Jaren Jackson Jr. was picked by the Memphis Grizzlies with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
Michigan State struck gold with Richardson — son of Spartans legend Jason Richardson — this past season. Richardson emerged as one of the Spartans’ top players during the season and was critical in leading Michigan State to the Big Ten title and an Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Tournament.
In his lone season with the Spartans, Richardson averaged 12.1 points per game and shot above 40% from three-point range. His strong play throughout the season turned Richardson into a clear-cut NBA Draft first round pick.
Richardson is the 22nd Spartan to ever be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, and 12th Spartan to play for Tom Izzo to be selected in the first round. He also joins his father as a first round selection, with Jason Richardson being picked No. 5 overall in the 2001 NBA Draft.
