Just last season we watched Nikola Jokic take home the award for the third time in last four seasons, and once he won his third MVP award, we knew that the Joker was arguably the best basketball player in the world. This season has been no different as Jokic has continued to show his dominant self in the postseason and the regular season.So today, we’re here to talk all about the MVP award. When is it handed out, the top contenders for the 2025 season, how it is decided who the NBA MVP is, and who has the most MVP trophies. Without further ado, let’s get right into it.

When Will the NBA MVP Announced for 2025?

This season the league has not announced when it will be announcing the NBA MVP award. However, usually, the award is handed out sometime between the first round and the second round of the NBA playoffs. But this season, even now that most teams are in the Conference finals, Adam Silver and the rest of the league have still not announced who the league MVP is for the 2024-25 season.

How Is the NBA MVP Decided?

The NBA MVP is decided by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters who all cast votes for their top 5 MVP candidates. It is said that each voter assigns points based on the ranking, where first-place votes is worth 10 points, second place vote is worth 7, and that goes on down to the fifth place, which is the last and worth only 1 point. The player with the highest count wins the NBA MVP trophy in the end.

NBA MVP 2025 Top Contenders

The top candidates for the NBA MVP award for the 2024-2025 regular season are;

• Shai Gilgeous Alexander- OKC
• Nikola Jokic-DEN
• Giannis Antetokounmpo-MIL
• Jayson Tatum-BOS
• LeBron James-LAL

 

The race has now come down to only two possibilities and it is between Shai Gilgeous Alexanders of the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. Both these players had phenomenal seasons, and are currently headed to game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals. While we are not sure about when the results will come out, we think they’ll come out right after Game 7’s conclusion. If Jokic wins the award, it’ll be his fourth award which will tie him with LeBron James, making him only the 6th player in NBA history to own 4 or more MVP awards.Meanwhile if SGA ends up winning the award, we’ll be celebrating the player of the best team in the NBA of the 2024-25 regular season. The Thunder won 68 games this season and were the best team in the entire NBA. So if you ask us, the obvious MVP choice should be SGA this season despite Jokic’s insane stats that he put up this season.

Kareem Abdul Jabber is the record holder for most NBA MVP awards won in NBA history with 6. Bill Russell and Michael Jordan have both won the award 5 times each. And LeBron James and Wilt Chamberlain have won the NBA MVP award 4 times in their outstanding NBA careers.
