Al Horford is reportedly weighing retirement as one of the few remaining unrestricted free agents on the NBA market, according to The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.
“Horford’s future remains unclear,” Himmelsbach reported. “A league source said Monday that Horford is taking his time while assessing offers from multiple teams but added that the 39-year-old is considering retirement, too.”
Horford recently wrapped up a two-year, $19.5 million contract with the Celtics and capped it off with an NBA championship in 2024.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Golden State Warriors emerged as a favorite if Horford were to remain in the league and are currently “waiting” on a decision from the vet.
After losing longtime center Kevon Looney to the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason, the Warriors could greatly benefit from the veteran presence of Horford, even for a short amount of time.
However, news of Horford seriously weighing retirement just days after reports suggested he was “destined” for Golden State, per Stein, is a tough pill to swallow for fans in The Bay.
The Warriors’ quiet offseason has already drawn frustration from the fanbase, but landing Horford would be a major boost. Stein previously labeled the veteran big man as Golden State’s “top target” in free agency—a potential stabilizing presence for a roster in need of size, leadership and shooting alongside Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler.
In his 18th NBA season, Horford averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 36.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Now, after nearly two decades in the league, it seems the former No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 draft is down to two options: joining Golden State or calling it a career.
