NOTES:
* Interesting to note that Clemson jumped up ahead of Ohio State this week. That likely won’t mean a thing in the long run, but it’s another feather in the cap of the ACC. You don’t normally see an ACC school bumped ahead of a blue-blood like Ohio State on a week in which the Buckeyes won, and won by a wide margin (42-7 over San Diego St.)
* You can look at Miami’s jump from the realm of the unranked all the way up to No. 15 in a similar light. That’s a HUGE leap, even though it’s just week two and pollsters are getting better about not being afraid to tear up their ballots and start again in the early weeks. For as much flack as the ACC has gotten nationally in recent years – much of it justified – there’s still always been this pent-up desire to hop back on the Miami (and FSU) bandwagon. The Hurricanes have finally given the pundits cause, it appears.
* FSU and Clemson continue to hold down two spots in the Top 10. Here’s the conference breakdown:
The SEC leads the way (of course) with four teams. The ACC and the Pac-12 are next with two teams each. Then it’s one apiece for the AAC (future ACC program Louisville) and the Big Ten.
Missing from that group? The Big 12, which has Oklahoma State as its highest-ranked team, at No. 12.
Does it mean anything? Not really. But you have to imagine at least a few people at the ACC offices noticed that after enduring plenty of unflattering comparisons to the Big 12 during the Summer of Realignment back in 2012.
