For over half a century, the New York Knicks have been chasing an elusive NBA championship. Their last title came in 1973, when legends like Willis Reed, Walt “Clyde” Frazier, and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe led the franchise to glory. Since then, heartbreak, mismanagement, and years of mediocrity have defined the Knicks—until now.
With a revamped roster, a rising superstar in Jalen Brunson, and a reinvigorated fanbase, the Knicks are closer than ever to ending their drought. But can they finally bring a championship back to Madison Square Garden?
The Long Wait
The Knicks’ championship window in the 1990s, led by Patrick Ewing, John Starks, and Charles Oakley, came agonizingly close but fell short in two NBA Finals appearances (1994 and 1999). Since then, the franchise has struggled through dysfunctional ownership, poor draft picks, and failed superstar experiments (Carmelo Anthony’s era brought playoff appearances but no deep runs).
But under team president Leon Rose and head coach Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks have rebuilt with a mix of young talent (RJ Barrett, Julius Randle) and savvy veterans (Josh Hart, Donte DiVincenzo). The arrival of Jalen Brunson in 2022 has been a game-changer, transforming New York into a legitimate contender.
2024 Playoffs: A Glimpse of Hope
Last season, the Knicks made a thrilling run to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, pushing the eventual Eastern Conference champions, the Indiana Pacers, to seven games. Brunson’s emergence as a bona fide superstar (averaging 32+ PPG in the playoffs) and the team’s relentless defense under Thibodeau have fans believing again.
The offseason additions of Mikal Bridges (via trade) and re-signing OG Anunoby solidify the Knicks as one of the deepest teams in the league. If Julius Randle can stay healthy and Brunson continues his ascent, this could be the year New York breaks through.
The Biggest Obstacles
The Eastern Conference is tougher than ever. The Boston Celtics, fresh off a championship, remain the team to beat, while the Milwaukee Bucks (with Giannis and Dame) and the Philadelphia 76ers (Embiid and Maxey) loom as major threats. The Knicks will need health, consistency, and clutch performances to overcome these powerhouses.
Can They Do It?
The pieces are in place. The Knicks have elite scoring, elite defense, and the kind of grit that defines championship teams. If everything clicks, Madison Square Garden could witness its first title parade in over 50 years.
For long-suffering Knicks fans, the dream is alive. The question is: Will 2025 finally be the year?
