Can Blue Devils land highly touted point guard?

Duke’s uphill battle against Texas to land point guard Matt Coleman is set to end on Monday when the heralded recruit will make his college choice public.

The Longhorns have long been the leader for the 6-1 Coleman, who plays at Oak Hill Academy. The Norfolk, Va., native has had a close relationship with Texas coach Shaka Smart dating back to Smart’s time at VCU.

Still, Duke made a strong run at Coleman last summer, such that the Blue Devils and Longhorns are his final two teams. He’s scheduled to make his announcement on ESPNU’s coverage of the Hoophall Classic Tournament on MLK Day.

ESPNU will televise Oak Hill’s 1 p.m. game with Nathan Hale (Wash.) with Coleman expected to make his announcement at halftime of the preceding game that starts at 11 a.m.

Jeff Capel, Duke’s associate head coach who is the team’s acting head coach while Mike Krzyzewski recovers from back surgery, has been in regular, almost daily, contact with Coleman. Duke hosted Coleman for a visit last September, but his most recent official visit was to Texas in October.
