We recently returned from the Nike EYBL (Elite Youth Basketball League) Finals at the Peach Jam in North Augusta (S.C.), where 6-9 Seattle (Wash.) Nathan Hale rising senior power forward Michael Porter and 6-2 Norman (Okla.) North rising senior point guard Trae Young led Mokan Elite to the championship of the 17-Under Division.
In the process, Porter (now a Washington commit) firmly established himself as the current No. 1 prospect in the high school class of 2017, while Young has moved into the top five as the top point guard prospect in the same class.
In the championship game, a scintillating 93-65 trouncing of the New York-based PSA Cardinals, Porter tallied 33 points and shot 12-of-16 from the field (including 5-of-6 on three-pointers), and Young contributed 28 points (9-15 FGs and 6-10 3FG), 11 assists and three steals. Their play in the quarterfinals (a 33-point victory) and the semifinals (an 18-point triumph) was also terrific, as they totally dominated strong and talented foes.
