Monday marked the beginning of the trial for what some are calling the case that could forever change the structure of college athletics. That would be Ed O’Bannon v. the NCAA, and its potential impact on major college sports has become an enormous topic of debate.
North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year and attorney David Glenn weighed in on the topic on Monday, explaining what factors are involved in the case and why it could take years to reach a resolution.
“This is going to be a multi-year process,” the radio host said. “Keep in mind, the NCAA is entrenched in the idea that they can cling to the principle of amateurism while continuing forward with maybe some tweaked version of what’s been in place for a long time.”
Glenn stated that while the initial trial could take months, the appeals that will inevitably follow could take several years.
“Even if they lose the O’Bannon case, that is going to be appealed, and it would even be appealed beyond that to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. This is that big of a principle. It’s going to take weeks, if not months, for this case to play out.”
