It’s become commonplace — when watching a football game — to see an offensive team driving down the field, only to have an untimely penalty negate a big play, and hear one of the announcers say, “That holding penalty was a backbreaker. It will now be 2nd-and-17 from their own 42.” This a hypothetical scenario that’s just been painted, and that’s cliched line of dialogue that will be said during football games from now until the end of time, but that doesn’t take away from the point, which is that penalties aren’t good. It lowers your odds of winning if bad things happen to your team. No duh; we all know that!
Here’s a look at how all 14 ACC teams stack up in terms of penalties through the first six weeks of football. By this point in the season, everyone has played a minimum of five games, but we’ve sorted by per game measurements to adjust for differentiations in total minutes played:
