Feinstein talks Krzyzewski successor, UNC/NCSU scandals and more

Author and sportswriter John Feinstein joined The David Glenn Show on Friday to discuss his new book, The Legends Club. The book tells the story of the rivalry and friendships of Mike Krzyzewski, Dean Smith and Jim Valvano.

Feinstein spent an hour in-studio with the show, and the conversation covered a variety of topics that included:

  • How Coach K’s back issues in the mid-’90s almost ended his marriage.
  • The coaching job Valvano nearly took after his time at NC State came to an end.
  • A story of the last time Coach K saw Smith.
  • Valvano asking Smith to throw out the first pitch at a Yankees game when he was too sick to go.
  • The coach whom Feinstein believes will succeed Coach K at Duke.
  • The relationships shared between the wives of Krzyzewski, Smith and Valvano.
  • Comparisons between the UNC scandal and the NCAA scandal that took place at NC State in the ’80s.
