New NCAA and NBA rules regarding the eligibility of college basketball underclassmen who declare for the NBA Draft have so far been a success.
This year, underclassmen who entered their names in the draft without hiring agents have been allowed to be flown out to work out for teams, participate in the NBA Draft Combine (if invited) and evaluate their options until the deadline to withdraw from the draft. That deadline is 10 days after the combine, which falls on May 25 this year.
Some players around the ACC, such as Justin Jackson and Kennedy Meeks of UNC and Xavier Rathan-Mayes of Florida State, have already decided to return to school after testing the waters. Others, including Jaron Blossomgame of Clemson and Chinanu Onuaku of Louisville, are still weighing their options.
The new, player-friendly system has already resulted in plenty of positives, and on Wednesday, ACCSports.com contributor David Glenn discussed on his radio show why this might be the best early entry format the NBA has ever had.
